HISTORY OF IRISH WHISKEY

Whiskey is a spirit distilled from malted grain; including barley, rye, wheat & corn. Once distilled, it is typically aged in wooden casks of oak from where it draws its characteristic chemical composition, taste and particular nose.

‘Uisce beatha’ is Gaelic for whiskey which translates to ‘the water of life’ and its meaning harps back to the original ‘medicinal’ nature of its production. Irish whiskeys are normally triple distilled, and by law, must be produced in Ireland, aged in wooden casks for a period of no less than three years and bottled in Ireland. Irish whiskeys fall into one of several types; single malt, single grain, blended and pure pot still whiskey.
